Main Duties & Responsibilities

The Director of Learning is a member of the Museum's Senior Leadership Team (SLT), responsible for leading the Museum's learning and engagement strategy, developing innovative programmes and ensuring that learning remains central to the Museum's future development. The postholder will lead the continued evolution of the Museum's awardwinning learning programmes, building on the opportunities created by Two Rooms by Jewish Museum London while helping shape the learning vision for the Museum's future permanent home.

The Director of Learning will develop and test new approaches to learning and engagement that expand the Museum's reach nationally through schools, communities, partnerships and digital delivery. They will play a key role in ensuring that learning informs exhibition development, audience engagement and organisational growth throughout this

exciting period of transformation.

Leadership and Strategic Development

• Lead, manage, inspire and develop the Learning team, building individual and collective capability and fostering a collaborative, innovative and high-performing culture

• Develop and deliver a sector-leading learning and engagement strategy aligned with the Museum's ten-year vision and strategic plan.

• Lead the Museum's learning programme across Two Rooms by Jewish Museum London, outreach activity, schools, community programmes and digital platforms.

• Develop innovative in-person, digital and hybrid learning opportunities that broaden participation and extend the Museum's reach nationally and internationally.

• Champion audience-centred practice, ensuring programmes are informed by consultation, evaluation and co-creation with diverse audiences.

• Build strategic partnerships with schools, universities, community organisations, museums and cultural partners to increase the Museum's impact and visibility.

• Lead, inspire and develop the Learning team, creating a collaborative, innovative and high-performing culture.

• Work with the CEO and Senior Leadership Team to establish and deliver ambitious audience, participation and earned income targets.

• Contribute strategically to the development of the future permanent museum, ensuring learning is embedded within gallery planning, interpretation and visitor experience from the earliest stages.

Programme Development and Delivery

• Oversee the design, delivery and continuous improvement of all formal and informal learning programmes.

• Ensure programmes reflect best practice in museum learning and respond to curriculum developments, audience needs and contemporary issues.

• Develop innovative approaches to digital learning, online resources and hybrid participation.

• Lead audience consultation and evaluation activities to inform future programming and organisational decision-making.

• Ensure the Museum continues to deliver an outstanding learning experience across all platforms and venues.

Partnerships and Fundraising

• Develop and maintain strong relationships with schools, local authorities, universities, cultural organisations and community partners.

• Work closely with the Development team to identify and secure funding for learning programmes through trusts, foundations, corporate supporters and public funders.

• Contribute to funding applications, project proposals and partnership development.

• Represent the Museum within professional networks, sector bodies and conferences, promoting the Museum as a leader in museum learning and engagement.

Reporting, Evaluation and Performance

• Develop an evaluation framework that demonstrates the impact of learning programmes and informs future planning.

• Set, monitor and report against key performance indicators for learning, participation, audience development and income generation.

• Prepare reports for funders, Trustees, Arts Council England, DCMS and other stakeholders.

• Contribute to Museum Impact Reports and organisational performance reporting.

• Ensure the successful delivery of all learning-related National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) commitments, Investment Principles activity and other funded programme objectives.

Financial Management

• Prepare and manage departmental budgets.

• Ensure effective financial planning, forecasting and monitoring of learning programmes.

• Work closely with the Finance team to ensure strong financial governance andvalue for money.

Marketing and Advocacy

• Champion the Museum's learning programmes through presentations, publications, conferences and professional networks.

• Work with colleagues to develop marketing campaigns, digital content and communications that maximise participation.

• Promote the Museum's learning work nationally and internationally, sharing best practice and building organisational profile.

Operations and Organisational Development

• Contribute to the strategic leadership of the Museum as a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

• Support organisational planning and change management as the Museum develops towards a new permanent home.

• Lead audience consultation projects and pilot initiatives that inform future exhibitions, learning spaces and visitor experiences.

• Contribute to staff development, organisational learning and training, including Judaism and cultural awareness training.

• Lead on safeguarding policy and practice, acting as the Museum's Designated Safeguarding Lead.

• Maintain responsibility for policies relating to safeguarding, volunteers, access and photography, ensuring they remain compliant with current legislation and best practice.

Person specification

The below experience, knowledge and skills have been identified as key to this post. We recognise that applicants may not possess every item on this specification. Please note that we are above all looking for applicants with strong strategic leadership capabilities and excellent knowledge and experience of devising innovative future facing learning and engagement programmes:

Essential

• Substantial experience of leading and developing creative and cultural learning programmes in museums heritage or similar setting, in a senior leadership or management position

• Line management experience

• Knowledge of sector best practice including new and emerging practices and drivers within cultural sector learning and engagement

• Proven experience of digital learning creation and delivery, as well as creating content and adapting it for different platforms and users

• Excellent leadership and managerial skills with experience of managing small teams successfully through periods of organisational change

• Knowledge of National Curriculum and the current in school context including barriers to accessing cultural learning and how these can be overcome

• Understanding and a commitment to the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion

• Ability to set and achieve income targets/audience participation targets with excellent budget management skills and experience

• Demonstrable experience of a user led, creative and innovative approach to developing learning and engagement models with clear learning outcomes

• A creative approach to the potential links between the Museum’s collection and the potential for connecting audiences with them through innovative learning and participatory practice

• Proven track record of building relationships internally across teams, departments and trustees as well as externally with other organisations

• Outstanding written, visual and oral communication skills for a range of audiences

• Ability to think strategically and demonstrate a hands on management approach

• Project management skills including excellent organisational, admin, analysis and

• budgeting skills

• Positive and solution focused approach to programme management and development with high levels of initiative, enthusiasm and drive

• Excellent team-working skills with ability to work independently as needed

• Able to work calmly and methodically under pressure, prioritise tasks and adapt to changing circumstances

• Knowledge of Jewish history, culture and heritage or related subjects including heritage, history and culture

Desirable

• Experience of working on capital projects

• Experience devising and delivering with Arts Council England or Heritage Fund activity plans and projects
